About Nathalie Fuson

I began painting in high school, under the instruction of Walter Bartman in Bethesda, MD. I received a BA in Fine Arts from New York University and studied painting and drawing at the Art Student's League of New York, where my instructors included Cornelia FossPeter CoxFrank O’Cain, and Peter Homitzky, among others.

I work primarily in oil because I love the versatility and luminescence of the medium, but I also enjoy gouache and watercolor, which enable me to paint when I travel. I seek to capture the ethereal dimension between realism and surrealism, even when painting everyday subjects. I aim to create landscapes and still-lifes that evoke an emotional impact, and portraits that capture not only a subjects’ physical attributes but how it feels to occupy their place in the world by including a context of surroundings. When composing a portrait, the “mise en scene” is as important as the subject’s likeness, for the setting and the details tell you all you need to know about the subject. I like to explore dreams, symbolism and personal iconography as devices for illustrating a message or experience, and to push the viewer to think and spark dialogue.
